Eiffel Tower from my hotel room, and the amusing contrast of the small, poorly presented beer aisle vs the very swank and well stocked wine selection at the local supermarket. The French certainly love their wine.

If you want a good selection of beer, go to Belgium. Even the night shops (approximately equivalent to a dairy in New Zealand) will have a dozen different types of beer, minimum. Much of it good. Some of it only really suitable to be exported (including many of the ones that advertise themselves as "premium" Belgium beers in New Zealand).

France, OTOH, is much more interested in wine. I suspect they only grudgingly admit that beer exists.

Aye, Brussels is my destination next week after departing Paris, looking forward to it.

Those photos in the grocery were absolute proof of the French disdain for beer...

And not even in the cooler, either.

Although I'm still baffled by the typical American beer drinker's obsession with drinking beet at or very near freezing. I guess the only way Bud Light is palatable is if you numb the taste buds first.

There's a delightful welsh pub within stumbling distance of the house with 20 beers on tap (and only two came out of a Clydesdale's kidneys), and they pour at 42F. An improvement, but still a little cold for a good thick beer.

Yeah, too cold is no bueno. But as you note, not a cold one to be had at all. Vive le France. :)

They drink Corona in France? Maybe because Kronenbourg sucks :)

Heh. They had bugger all, period. Not clear from the photo, but the left hand side of the aisle was juice...

Be sure and go up to the top of it - The view is to die for and the wind can be something else. I've got a rather neat video of Suellen leaning against it when we were there in 2001. It was a snappy day:-)
